These 40-foot, branchless palms, specifically Sabal gretheriae or Sabal yapa, are a native palm to the Yucatán Peninsula and have been used for centuries by the Maya for constructing traditional thatched roofs (palapas), fences, and crafting brooms. They are essential to the region's sustainable building practices and carry deep ecological, cosmic, and architectural significance in Maya culture. Far from being just a building resource, it is viewed as a sacred material that connects the home directly to the order of the cosmos. Using fresh huano as an altar piece connects the ritual space directly to nature. The traditional huano roof is considered a living representation of the cosmos. It bridges the gap between the earthly realm and the heavens, offering divine protection.
Concrete:
Concrete symbolizes permanence. Spiritually, it represents an unbreakable foundation and a commitment that will not shift. Concrete is made from natural, raw elements (stone, water, sand) that are bound together. It represents how earthly lives can be unified and transformed into a sturdy, sacred space.
Scarab (gold ring):
The golden scarab symbolizes rebirth and transformation. It acts as a powerful protective amulet and symbolizes the daily renewal of the sun. A symbol of hope at the creation of new beginnings.
